Why is Unified Communication still unknown to Small & Medium Businesses?

Enterprise communication needs are tending towards unified communications integrating real-time communication services such as chat, presence information, voice, extension mobility, audio & video conferencing, data sharing, and call control with non-real-time communication services such as integrated voicemail, fax, e-mail and SMS over internet.

The unification of these services is not necessarily a single product, but a multitude of products that may or may not provide a consistent unified user interface and user experience across multiple devices.

It may come as a surprise that for requirements with less than 100 users, the solutions sold even today by popular brands are either old tech hence lacking features and integration capabilities, or incur an incremental cost per feature or too complex requiring specialized skills to implement and manage – enough reasons to keep SMBs away from unification communications.

Hence, businesses either stay locked with poor technology or move towards cloud-based services that can be expensive as you start scaling or adding features, hence, offer only a short term benefit.

Unified Communications market size is forecasted to grow from USD 34.8 billion in 2015 to USD 96 billion by 2023.

In terms of number of PBX extensions sold world-wide by type of technology, the split between IP-based versus non-IP-based technology is roughly 50:50. About 3% of this market is moving from on-premise to a cloud-based solution YoY, which is anticipated to go up as customer dissatisfaction from lacking features, continues to rise.

Customers in this segment have indicated a demand for features like, auto-attendant (IVR) and auto-call distribution that reduces or removes dependence on a receptionist, fax and voicemail over e-mail that ensures access to information when they need it – where they need it, call control and conferencing capabilities that ensure seamless communication and collaboration, seamless use of the smart phone as soft-phone that declutters the desk and reduces cabling and infrastructure costs.

Repetitive cabling costs are of no consequence and hurt businesses that are required to move every few years due to leased spaces. A wireless solution not only makes the solution quick to deploy but also cost effective.
